Seattle Residential Landlords Must Register Rental Properties

Seattle residential landlords are now required by law to register their rental properties. It is illegal to “ rent, subrent, lease, sublease, let, or sublet to any person or entity a rental housing unit without first obtaining and holding a current rental housing registration for the property where the rental housing unit is located.”  SMC 22.214.040(A).

Seattle residential landlords “may not evict residential tenants from rental housing units if the units are not registered with the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections as required.” SMC 22.214.075(A).

Seattle residential rental properties are subject to random inspections.

Registration is simple and can be done online on the City of Seattle website.
